There's a famous saying: "History is written by the victors." Howard Zinn changed that when he published his landmark "A People's History of the United States" and set off a "quiet revolution." Now, acclaimed monologist Mike Daisey, whom "The New York Times" called "one of the finest solo performers of his generation," picks up where Zinn left off, bringing his trademark blend of the personal and historical to bear in exploring the side of American history they don't teach you in school. From Columbus to today's explosive political climate, Daisey explores the history of those fighting to make America live up to its ideals, and the times when we've fallen sadly short. See Mike Daisey's timely "A People's History" at Seattle Repertory Theatre. [less-]

On September 12, 2001, people of every nation woke up to a different world. Seven thousand airline passengers discovered just how different when their flights were diverted to a small town in Newfoundland, doubling its population and leaving them stranded. And yet, despite clashing cultures and high tensions, the locals welcomed the travelers into their homes. This heartwarming true story is the basis for the Tony-winning musical "Come From Away", directed by Christopher Ashley, who took home the Best Director Tony for the show's Broadway run. The national tour is stopping at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre, so come see the show the "New York Daily News" called "a singing reminder that when things are at their worst, people can be at their best." Café Nordo invites you to the world premiere of "The Witching Hour", an immersive culinary event. You'll find this Pioneer Square brick-box dinner theater transformed into the forgotten wing of a natural-history museum and once inside, you'll encounter a gathering of self-styled occultists reading from an ancient text, unwittingly unleashing the five Nocturnal Fears -- Harm, Loneliness, Failure, Filth and Chaos. As the elvish attendants guide you through charms and spells, you'll indulge in a "four-curse" meal of interactive and innovative cuisine. Not your average everyday haunted-house attraction, this experience gives a nod to pop-culture satirists Joss Whedon and Christopher Guest, so you're more likely to die of laughter than of fright. With frothy cocktails and Wiccan wine, this evening is for adults only. [less-]

In her latest theatrical creation inspired by a classic legend, Mary Zimmerman re-imagines "The White Snake," an ancient Chinese folktale in which a snake spirit transforms herself into a beautiful woman in order to experience the human world. Adventuring down her mountainside with her companion, Green Snake, White Snake meets and falls in love with the humble, virtuous Xu Xian and convinces him to marry her. Together, the three friends open a pharmacy, but soon the remarkable healing powers of White Snake draw the attention of a treacherous monk, Fa Hai. Outraged at the union between a mortal and a snake spirit, Fa Hai takes it upon himself to destroy it. Zimmerman brings to this timeless romance her usual brilliant mix of ingenious stagecraft, song, abundant humor and compassion.
