The Watermelon Woman – 20th Anniversary Screening
October 22, 2016 @ 2:45 pm - 4:45 pm
THE WATERMELON WOMAN
Dir. Cheryl Dunye
90 min. | USA | 1997
Director and cast scheduled to attend!
Pay phones, VHS tapes, and unflattering overalls are outward signs that this film, the first made by a black lesbian, is from another time. But writer-director Cheryl Dunye (who will be in attendance for this special 20th anniversary screening) uses humor to tell a story tinged with racism and police brutality that resonates more strongly today than ever.
Dunye plays herself, an aspiring filmmaker working at a Philadelphia video store whose fascination with “mammy” actresses from films of the ’30s leads to a fictional documentary on Fae (Lisa Marie Brunson), callously listed in movie credits as “Watermelon Woman.” Winner of the 1996 Teddy Award for Best Feature Film at the Berlin International Film Festival and Audience Award for Outstanding Narrative Feature at Outfest.
Contains sexual situations.
Copresented by Pocaan Seattle.
