Trans Solidarity Field Day: Decline to Sign I-1552
May 14, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm
Initiative 1552, an insidious initiative against our transgender community, is attemping to gather enough signatures to sneak onto the November ballot. This would be a huge setback for our state.
We ask that campaigns across Seattle join Washington Won’t Discriminate and the Neighborhood Action Coalition by weaving a message and strategy against I-1552 in their own field work. We also invite participation in a trans solidarity field day on May 14th to ask Washingtonians to commit that they will decline to sign I-1552.
We must join the transgender community and Washington Won’t Discriminate in their decline to sign campaign. We simply cannot let hate go unchecked in a city claiming to be a leader of the progressive movement and the Trump resistance.
Agenda for the day:
10:00am: Arrive
10:30am: Presentation on I-1552 and Decline to Sign Campaign
11:00am-12:30pm: Training and Distribution of Field Assignments
12:30pm: Release to Lunch and Field
4:00pm: Return to Local 6 to Debrief and Turn In Pledges
***Note: If you have a car, please bring it. If you don’t have a car, we will buddy you up with someone who does.
More on I-1552:
I-1552 would repeal Washington State’s 11-year-old non-discrimination protection for transgender people.
I-1552 would allow businesses to discriminate against transgender people, or people perceived to be transgender by denying them access to their appropriate gender segregated facilities.
I-1552 would require schools to discriminate against transgender students, or students perceived to be transgender by denying them access to their appropriate gender segregated facilities.
I-1552 would give students the ability to sue the public schools $5,000 each time they encounter a transgender student in their appropriate gender segregated facility.
I-1552 would allow people to ignore legal government documents to enforce this discrimination.
I-1552 would ban local smaller governments from creating their own non-discrimination protections for transgender people.
I-1552 does not prevent men access to women only spaces as it is already illegal to do so.
I-1552 does not make women any safer in women only spaces. Sexual assault and voyeurism is already illegal.
