Cherdonna Shinatra: Clock That Construct

This spring, the Henry hosts Seattle-based dance artist Jody Kuehner/Cherdonna Shinatra for a month-long, private residency followed by a series of public performances in the galleries titled Clock That Construct. Through the persona of Cherdonna, Kuehner draws on traditions of feminist and queer performance using her body as a canvas to confront and confuse the social and cultural tropes that constitute the feminine. During her time at the Henry, Kuehner will experiment with new possibilities for her alter ego, exploring Cherdonna as baby and the potential of play to re-imagine social relationships.

ACCESSIBILITY

Henry Art Gallery is accessible to all visitors. Please notify the staff of any special needs or concerns when planning to attend this event.

Outside of these scheduled performances, the gallery-cum-stage set is open for visitors to enter Cherdonna’s imaginary world and explore the material traces that have accumulated during her performances in the space.

Clock That Construct at the Henry aggregates Cherdonna’s performance materials and serves as an active, generative site for exploring new possibilities from within her performance history. Clock That Construct supports Cherdonna’s current two-year, three-part project, one great, bright, brittle all togetherness, realized through a unique partnership between Seattle’s Velocity Dance Center (lead presenter partner) and On the Boards, with generous support from the National Dance Project. Part II, Clock that Mug or Dusted premiered at Velocity in 2016, and the culminating Part III premieres at On the Boards in October 2017.
In conjunction with Clock That Construct, a selection of work from the Henry’s collection that addresses the performativity of identity and the individual and collective weight of cultural scripts and expectations will be on view April 15 to May 21. This presentation features work by Tamy Ben-Tor, Candice Breitz, and Aneta Grzeszykowksa, among others.
CREDITS

Clock That Construct is organized by Luis Croquer, Deputy Director of Exhibitions, Collections and Programs, and Nina Bozicnik, Associate Curator, in collaboration with Tonya Lockyer, Artistic + Executive Director of Velocity Dance Center. The presentation of selections from the collection is organized by Bozicnik and Krista Schoening, Graduate Curatorial Assistant.

About the Author: Michael Strangeways

As the Editorial Director/Co-Owner, Michael Strangeways writes, edits and does about a million other jobs for Seattle Gay Scene, Puget Sound's most visited LGBTQ news, arts and entertainment website now celebrating its 14th year as a media outlet. A semi-proud Midwesterner by birth, he's lived in Seattle since 2000. He's also a film producer who would like you to check out the Jinkx Monsoon documentary, "Drag Becomes Him" now available on Amazon.com. In his spare time, he gets slightly obsessive about his love for old movies, challenging theater, "otters", vodka, chocolate, "I,Claudius", Lizzie Borden, real books made out of paper, disaster films, show tunes, Weimar era Germany, flea markets, pop surrealistic art, the sex lives of Hollywood actors both living and dead, kitties, chicken fried steak, haute couture and David Bowie. But, not necessarily in that order.
