Doorways by Sean Newman on display at Benham Gallery
Sean Newman will be one of the featured artists at the Erotic Beauties Exhibit from March 5th – April 12th at Benham Gallery. Sean Newman is focused on producing intimate, emotional images of people, with a sense of eroticism. His work challenges the viewer to ponder “what just happened,” “what is about to happen,” and to formulate ideas about the character’s emotions and thoughts.
Public viewings Wednesday – Saturday 11 to 6 pm. There will be an Artists Reception for this exhibit on Thursday March 6th from 6 to 8 pm. On Saturday March 8th at 2 pm there will be a Gallery Panel Discussion and slide presentation with the artists. This discussion will be lead by David Steinberg Author of “Divas Of San Francisco, Portraits of Transsexual Women.”
Paul Dalquist, David Steinberg, and Fiona Aboud will also show works all of which related to the show’s title, Erotic Beauty.
Fiona Aboud will be showing her stunning “Queens of Carnival” photos which she took in her native country of Brazil while doing an on-parade portrait series in Rio.
This exhibit was attacked over Easter Sunday in an apparent rejection of the show’s content, which includes photographs of transgender women and gay men.
The Seattle Times reports that the gallery’s front window, which displayed three photos from the show, was smeared with feces on Saturday while the gallery was open. On Sunday a metal utility cover was thrown through the glass window.
Marita Holdaway, curator of Benham Gallery, said in a press release, “We believe our window was smashed by a person who was challenged by the content of this exhibition. The subjects of these artworks have experienced enough of this kind of cowardliness and violence. We are happy to discuss our curatorial decisions with anyone who wishes to talk with us instead of experiencing this kind of behavior.”
The “Erotic Beauty” exhibition is on display at the Benham Gallery thru April 12. The gallery is open Wed – Sat from 11 AM – 6 PM. On “First Thursdays Art Walk” the gallery remains open until 8 PM.
No photographs were damaged in the attack.
