Opening on Stage this week

March 13, 2008• bySeattle Gay Scene

One of the most important theater openings of the year in Seattle, The Ilkhom Theatre Festival begins Friday March 14, 2008, at the ACT Theatre with the official opening night on March 20, 2008.

Theatre Director Mark Weil was murdered in September 2007.

The late Mark Weil was the world-renowned director of the Uzbek theater group that produced controversial gay-friendly productions of freethinking dissent for decades, even during Soviet rule. His unsolved murder in Uzbekistan was just six months ago in September under suspicious circumstances. He was attacked and stabbed to death by two men who took nothing from him. Immediately following his murder, Uzbek State media outlets pretended to be unaware of the tragic death of one of the best known Uzbek’s in the world. One of his most controversial features of his productions, performed in conservative Uzbekistan, was his sympathetic gay themes and characters.

His last words right before he died were, “I open a new season tomorrow — and everything must happen.”
