SAM and Three Dollar Bill Cinema will be co-presenting a Gay Pride Film Series on Fridays starting with “Boys in the Band” on Friday, June 13 at the Plestcheeff Auditorium. The Boys in the Band (1970) is about eight gay men at a birthday party and one of the earliest films to depict gay life originally earning an “R” rating because of the subject matter. While the images, clichés and ideas may be dated it represented groundbreaking gay cinema nearly 40 years ago.
Another factor dating The Boys in the Band is that the film was made before the AIDS epidemic, so it does not address that issue. Sadly, several of the film’s actors, including Kenneth Nelson, Leonard Frey, Keith Prentice, Frederick Combs and Robert La Tourneaux, would die from AIDS-related illnesses.
You can buy a pass for all three movies for the Gay Pride Film Series.
