The Outdoor Movie Series Returns To Cal Anderson Park:
Who says it’s not easy being green? Three Dollar Bill Cinema is making it simple and fun this summer with a free series of eco-minded, tongue-in-cheek films presented under the stars and on the grass at Capitol Hill’s Cal Anderson Park.
The series gets off to a big start on Friday, July 18, with THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING WOMAN. Lily Tomlin stars as an ordinary housewife with an extraordinary problem stemming from overexposure to everyday chemicals and toxins. Written by Tomlin’s longtime partner, Jane Wagner, this hit comedy from 1981 — still not available on DVD – was directed by gay filmmaker Joel Schumacher and also stars Charles Grodin and Ned Beatty.
On Friday, August 1, Cal Anderson Park will be overtaken by FROGS. In this campy ‘cautionary tale’ from 1972, members of a dysfunctional family find themselves in deep trouble when their stately Southern home is invaded by all manner of creepy crawlies, striking back against the poisons and pesticides being dumped on their natural turf. Sam Elliot stars in perhaps the tightest pair of jeans ever seen on film. Rounding out the cast, from the murkiest ends of the talent pool: Academy Award winner Ray Milland and Joan Van Ark of TV’s “Knots Landing.”
The summer screenings wrap up on August 15 with THE GANG’S ALL HERE. This must-see musical comedy from 1943 is getting the ‘one more time’ treatment, recycled from last year’s lineup due to a rain cancellation. Carmen Miranda and the Benny Goodman Orchestra are back to get things swinging with naturally toe-tapping numbers including “The Lady In The Tutti-Frutti Hat” and “Brazil,” in over-the-top productions created by the master of the movie musical, Busby Berkeley.
Last summer, ‘Features From the Black Lagoon’ made a debut splash by presenting all movies on 16mm film, including CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON in 3-D. This year will be even bigger and better, with all features to be projected in glorious 35mm film. It’s the only outdoor series of its kind in the Seattle area!
All screenings are free and begin at dusk (around 8:30-9 pm) at the southeast corner of Capitol Hill’s Cal Anderson Park, adjacent to the Bobby Morris Playfields. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase on-site along with a limited number of lawnchair rentals, with proceeds benefiting Three Dollar Bill Cinema’s non-profit efforts to produce and promote queer-friendly film events in the Pacific Northwest.
