Surprise. Same-sex marriage ban driven by religion not race.
Supporting the ban was 85 percent of evangelical Christians, 66 percent of Protestants and 60 percent of Roman Catholics. I think the fact that only 60% of Roman Catholics supported the ban might be interpreted as a positive.
The poll also showed voters who did not attend college supported the ban by a high 69%. More importantly 48% of California voters say they oppose same-sex marriage while 47% actually say they support it.
Some other surveys in California point to some paradoxical results.
Japanese Americans and Indian Americans, who supported Barack Obama at higher percentages than the other Asian ethnic groups, said they were more likely to vote yes on the ban. Vietnamese, who were the only Asian American ethnic group to support John McCain, reported they were more likely to vote no on the ban.
