From the novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson comes this special production as the ACT Theatre opens their 45th season in Seattle.
Jeffrey Hatcher has seen the Victorians, and they are us. In his inventive retelling of the classic thriller, four different actors play Henry Jekyll’s depraved alter ego. With its observations on the blurry line between good and evil, audiences will savor this show’s psychological musings as much as its classic melodrama. And if you think this timeless story just might say something about how we live today, well…the doctor is in.
Hatcher’s new play honors Robert Louis Stevenson’s original 1886 novella, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, while adding a brisk pace and complex interpretation of the murky relationship between good and evil with bloodcurdling sound effects, a minimalist set, and authentic costume stylings. The overall design relies on an all gray color palette with occasional punches of blood red and bile yellow. It integrates props and music reminiscent of 19th century Victorian England and, of course, there will be fog.
Tickets for students/people 25 and under are just $10/$15. For more info about tickets visit ACTTheatre.org.
And before the performance on April 17th don’t miss ACT Theatre’s “Tastings” at 6:30pm where ACT unveils a delicious new tradition: beers, wines, and beverages from around the world, paired with local artisan foods—all matched to fit the theme of our mainstage productions!
Also in conjunction with this performance, 4 Horseman/PURE Cirkus presents Le Cabaret Noir, a spectacular variety show of Queens and Harlots from all over the Northwest. As the mainstage production Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde examines the area between good and evil, this companion piece will take things one stiletto-heel-step further and spotlight the tantalizing ambiguity of gender-bending performance art. Le Cabaret Noir features fabulous drag queens, boom-pow burlesque, uncanny impersonators, torchy chanteuses and more. A rotating cast of performers will include: Ben De La Crème, Fuschia Foxxx, Paula the Swedish Housewife, Ultra, Sydni Deveraux, Ernie Von Schmaltz, Waxie Moon, Indigo Blue, and Boi/y’s Club.
