The Beijing Dance Academy (China’s equivalent of Juilliard) premieres their first Northwest production of The Butterfly Lovers. Hailed as China’s Romeo and Juliet, The Butterfly Lovers tells of a forbidden marriage and 
will be performed to the popular 1959 violin concerto, of the same name, by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao. This is one of the most beautiful and famous works of Chinese music ever created. It is choreographed by Zhang Jianmin (2005 film The House of Flying Daggers).
The evening also includes a selection of award-winning classical Chinese pieces, choreographed by China’s best up and coming choreographers. Pieces include:
- Singing of the Wind (gold medalist for choreography and silver medalist for performance at the First CCTV Dance Competition;
- Emperor Qin Shihuang Calls on Troops 1995 (inspired by the terra-cotta warriors of Qin Dynasty 221-207 BC, first prize winner of the Beijing Dance Competition, gold medalist for choreography and silver medalist for performance at the First CCTV Dance Competition).
The resident company is comprised of the best and the brightest from Beijing Dance Academy and range in age from 19-26 years old. Two shows on February 27 & 28, 2010, 7:30pm at The Paramount Theater. Tickets range from $25-$70. For more info and tickets, visit www.stgpresents.org.
