Gay City Takes on New Roles for Our Big Gay City

February 18, 2010• byMichael Strangeways

The fine, fine folks at Gay City are picking up the slack and filling a void left by the closing of the LGBT Center over a year ago and they’re opening a library and a LGBT resource and referral line dedicated to serving the needs of our community with a reliable source for information and help. They’re having a Grand Opening for the Library and Line this Thursday, February 18th from 6pm to 8pm at the Gay City offices at 511 E Pike Street. Refreshments are being served and you can meet the staff and volunteers and check out the library itself, (and make it home in time to watch the men’s figure skating finals!) The phone number for the Resource and Referral Line is 206-323-LGBT (5428) or visit the website for more info and links to dozens of LGBT organizations. (And remember, in case of crisis call the 24 Hour Crisis Line at 206-461-3222). I didn’t see specific hours posted for the Library or Referral line on the website, so I’m guessing it’s the same as Gay City’s hours which are Tuesday to Friday 3pm to 8pm and Saturdays from 1pm to 5pm. Any questions about the library/line either drop by the Grand Opening Thursday night and/or shoot them an email.

And, I have to say, I’m very delighted that Gay City is doing this. I volunteered at the LGBT Center for over a year working the front desk/referral line and we did get many visitors and calls from people who needed help with everything from “Where are the Gay Bars?” to “How do I Come Out?” to “Where do I get legal help if I’m being discriminated against?” It was and is a vital and necessary resource for our community. Support them and drop by on Thursday, or any day, and thank them for their contribution to the community…and if you can spare it, GIVE them a contribution of some cash once in awhile. Non-profits need tender loving care, expert management, a strong board of directors, the help of many volunteers and lots and lots of money to stay alive. We don’t want Gay City to go the way of the LGBT Center…

About the Author: Michael Strangeways

As the Editorial Director/Co-Owner, Michael Strangeways writes, edits and does about a million other jobs for Seattle Gay Scene, Puget Sound's most visited LGBTQ news, arts and entertainment website now celebrating its 14th year as a media outlet. A semi-proud Midwesterner by birth, he's lived in Seattle since 2000. He's also a film producer who would like you to check out the Jinkx Monsoon documentary, "Drag Becomes Him" now available on Amazon.com. In his spare time, he gets slightly obsessive about his love for old movies, challenging theater, "otters", vodka, chocolate, "I,Claudius", Lizzie Borden, real books made out of paper, disaster films, show tunes, Weimar era Germany, flea markets, pop surrealistic art, the sex lives of Hollywood actors both living and dead, kitties, chicken fried steak, haute couture and David Bowie. But, not necessarily in that order.
