Yes, yes…I know you’re all either sitting at home glued to the tube watching sparkly boys in tight spandex and silk waltz around the ice or out pining for spring and ordering your Martha Washington geraniums but it’s also a good time to get out and see/hear some music and to plan ahead for future shows. It’s not healthy to spend ALL your time in front of the tube or longing for bbq weather and the chance to wear your new plaid shorts you got on sale at Barney’s…ya gotta let the music play!
Coming up first is The Magnetic Fields with out frontman Stephen Merrit performing a show at Town Hall (1119 Eighth Avenue) next Tuesday, February 23rd. For tickets and info go here. This is a do not miss event for fans of their indie, folky, poppy, electronic, “impossible to describe but it’s divine” sound.
Tomorrow (Friday, February 19th) is another do not miss event: tickets go on sale at 10am for Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings performing at The Showbox SoDo on June 21st. Yes, I know, that’s a looooooong time away but this show is Going. To. Sell. Out. And, if you’re not in the know when it comes to Ms Jones then you Need. To. Be. Educated. This soulful Queen of the Funkalicious has been packing them in for the last few years and she is one of those delicious kept secrets that cannot remain the sole domain of the hip and the happening for much longer. And it took the lady a long while to get to the top; she spent years working as a prison guard and armored truck driver; the lady is fierce! For ticket info go here and for more info on Sharon and the Dap-Kings go there.
Also tomorrow night, the cute as a bug Kim Ann Foxman (she’s on the left in the picture; looks like she could be on the cover of Tiger Beat magazine!)from the alt/queer disco band Hercules and the Love Affair is bringing her crates of vinyl to Re-bar for a DJ gig starting at 10pm. Apparently she’s the star attraction of their monthly Trouble Disco party but the Re-bar website is sorely lacking in details…the site does not even mention Ms Foxman and there’s no info on cover charge. (I loves me some “Re-bar Place” but they need to upgrade the website…it sucks.)
Finally, I know she’s not a musician but I have to put in a plug for comedian Kate Clinton‘s upcoming shows at The Triple Door on Friday, March 5th…She is, after all, an icon for Ladies Who Like Ladies (as well as the rest of us non-ladies). She is also, funny as hell. Get tickets/info here.
That’s all the music news I got for now…more to talk about next week including news on Sasquatch and Local Bands you need to love. Until then, here’s a sneak peek of what’s in store for tonight on your tv screen, though I’m guessing he’ll be wearing more make-up and feathers: The King of Sparkly Ice Skaters and Our Ice Lord and Master. You MUST worship him or he will destroy you!
