When exactly did Gay Pride turn into a 4 day long event? Back in the olden days, when gays had cool ‘staches and aspired to be Colt Models and the Ladies Who Loved Ladies were keeping busy with Lentil Soup potlucks and angry feminist poetry, Gay Pride was basically a one day, (usually Sunday) event that consisted of a parade, a rally and a picnic in the park…then it went to a Saturday/Sunday thing in the Reagan era as businesses realized they could make a lot of bank from Queer Money and by the time that Bill and Hill were in power, it started stretching to Fridays as well…in the Age of the Bieber, Pride has turned into a four day long marathon/marketing opportunity designed to appeal to every segment of the population. I’m expecting it to be made a week long event about the time that Bristol Palin is made Secretary of Health and Human Services in her mother’s first administration…(kidding!)…(sort of…)
And, there is a LOT going on today, with dozens of events, parties, concerts, orgies, lectures and opportunities to buy lots of beer and ogle lots of same-sex flesh. Obviously, the best bets for brews and basket groping are at the bars and clubs and pretty much every single LGBT identified establishment and even most of the “straight” identified venues near them are hosting some sort of bacchanalia. Neighbours has a very special “Lily Armani Untucked” show tonight starting at 8:30pm with appearances from Falcon models, Landon Conrad and Adam Killian…and for those in need of a Latin flavored fix, Caliente will be going on in the Underground with Efren and his Divas…Meanwhile, up the Hill, Porn Auteur/Drag Diva/DJ Chi Chi LaRue will be spinning tunes at The Cuff starting at 11pm with a special appearance from Porn Star Josh Griffin, (apparently nothing says “Pride” like a ripped, gay porn star in a jockstrap and body oil!)

When I heard Ms La Rue was going to be in town for Pride, (she will also be hosting The Cuff’s Pride Street Party on Sunday) I had hoped to interview her for the site but it didn’t pan out…which is too bad, because I have (had) a relationship with Ms LaRue BEFORE she became a Porn/Drag/DJ Superstar in the late 80’s…In 1985 I lived in Minneapolis and worked in an adult video (ie, porn) store on Hennepin Avenue…the person who hired me: Chi Chi LaRue! True story. But, I returned the favor a year or so later after Larry (aka Chi Chi) moved to California to pursue his porno colored dreams. I was working at the porn store one evening when I got a phone call from Catalina Video and talked to some dude wanting a work reference for Larry/Chi Chi who had just interviewed for a sales job. Well, I gave Catalina a GLOWING reference about how fabulous Larry/Chi Chi was and what a huge asset he would be to their company, and he got the job and his career was launched…thanks SOLELY to ME! And, did the Bitch acknowledge me in her autobiography, Making It Big: Sex Stars, Porn Films and ME? No, she did NOT! I am not bitter…just emotionally crushed. Anyway, check out the newly skinny Chi Chi at The Cuff and tell her “Michael from Broadway Bookstore” says hi and ask her how our old boss, Bob is doing…
