Very, very sad news: Our Favorite Blanche, The Golden Girl’s Rue McClanahan is gone at age 76

June 3, 2010• byMichael Strangeways

On a show that was pretty much beloved by 9 out of 10 gay men who watched it, aging southern belle, defiant cougar and thin-skinned narcissist Blanche Devereaux was undeniably our favorite, and I defy you to find a gay male, GG fan who can’t quote you a beloved Blanche line at the drop of a hat, or more appropriately, at the drop of a flamboyantly mariboued negligee, Blanche’s preferred garment of choice. Sadly, the Real McCoy, actress Rue McClanahan passed away this morning after suffering a massive stroke. She was 76, (in Blanche years, that would be 56) and with her death, Betty White is the only surviving member of the cast.

I want to write more about Ms McClanahan and Blanche and The Golden Girls and what they meant to me, and I will, when I have time to compose a proper tribute…

A toast…A BIG FAT JUICY TEAR STAINED TOAST…to Rue McClanahan.

About the Author: Michael Strangeways

As the Editorial Director/Co-Owner, Michael Strangeways writes, edits and does about a million other jobs for Seattle Gay Scene, Puget Sound's most visited LGBTQ news, arts and entertainment website now celebrating its 14th year as a media outlet. A semi-proud Midwesterner by birth, he's lived in Seattle since 2000. He's also a film producer who would like you to check out the Jinkx Monsoon documentary, "Drag Becomes Him" now available on Amazon.com. In his spare time, he gets slightly obsessive about his love for old movies, challenging theater, "otters", vodka, chocolate, "I,Claudius", Lizzie Borden, real books made out of paper, disaster films, show tunes, Weimar era Germany, flea markets, pop surrealistic art, the sex lives of Hollywood actors both living and dead, kitties, chicken fried steak, haute couture and David Bowie. But, not necessarily in that order.
