I know many people moan that they would LOVE to attend more live theater events but it’s cost prohibitive for them; theater tickets are usually $15 to $60 depending on the venue and that can be tough for folks on a budget. (Of course, some of these people COULD quit buying all their groceries at “Whole Foods” or cut back on premium brand booze for a few weeks and THAT would free up some income for theater outings, but who am I to judge?) Happily, there are a few theaters that realize they have to resort to desperate measures to lure in cheap and poor patrons so they offer GREAT DEALS on ticket pricing…
The Annex Theater is currently very busy right now, with THREE productions up and running, (Her Mother was Imagination; Penguins, Episode III; Clubfoot) and tonight you can see one of those shows, Clubfoot, for only $10! That’s cheaper than a first run movie! Clubfoot, a new play written by Stephen McCandless and Bret Fetzer and based on McCandless’s experiences as an EMT, is the:
harrowing, surreal and wildly funny experiences of an Emergency Medical Technician. Jump in the ambulance and be transported into a tripwire world of manic teenage wrestling in the middle of I-5, stroked out delusionals, cutters, car crash victims, flesh-eating bacteria and more! It’s an outrageously skewed view of humanity at its worst and at its best: fragile, resilient and accident-prone!
Featuring Chris Dietz, Pamela Mijatov and one of my favorite local actors, Ray Tagavilla, the play runs tonight (Tuesday, August 24) and Wednesday, August 25 so you only have two more chances to see this at the Annex, 1100 E Pike (second floor) on Capitol Hill. Oh, and students are only $5! Get tickets HERE! As for their other two shows, Her Mother was Imagination and the late-night show, Penguins, Episode III they play through the weekend; Imagination ends Saturday night and Penguins on Friday night. Check them out.
Some other sweet theater news for the bargain shopper: The Strawberry Theatre Workshop (aka, “Strawshop”) is following up their very well reviewed production of “The Laramie Project” with another acclaimed gay themed play, Hugh Whitemore’s “Breaking the Code” which details the life and tragic death of Alan Turing, the British mathematician/Father of the Computer who was a WWII hero but also the victim of persecution for his sexuality. Breaking the Code runs September 9 through October 9 at the Erickson Theatre Off Broadway and tickets normally run $15 to $30 but early bird shoppers can score a deal for the shows that run Sept 9-25. Go to Brown Paper Tickets to buy your “Breaking the Code” tickets and use the discount code: CURSE to score $10 tickets for those shows. That’s a great bargain for a production from one of the most highly regarded theater companies in Seattle. I urge you to take advantage of this offer, NOW!
