Land of publicly funded health-care, delicious maple syrup, and Caribou. No not the animal… Well those too, but we’re talking about the man behind the band of the same name. Daniel Snaith (pictured below) originally started releasing material in 2000 under the name “Manitoba” until the threat of a decidedly stupid lawsuit drove him to change the band name to “Caribou” in 2004. Fortunately, he has pressed on and is now touring in promotion of his latest album, “Swim.”
So do you want the good news or the bad news first?
Good news: That tour is coming to the Showbox at the Market on October 4!
Bad News: PSYCH! There is no bad news! “Swim” is the top 10 short list for the Polaris Music Prize (check to see the results on September 20 here), and carries an exceptionally strong album architecture. From the texture rich “Hannibal,” to the gritty (and WILDLY popular) “Odessa” sporting an appropriately haunting video (below). This album even dips into the ever-decadent realm of Microhouse(!) with tracks like “Found Out.” And since you’re all going to iTunes to check out the album now anyway, make sure to check out the immensely enjoyable and electro-kissed Junior Boys remix of “Odessa.”
As if all this wasn’t enough to totally blow your lid, the Showbox website’s write-up of the event promises “…even more attention given to the live show than previously.” Eeeeeeeee!!!
Then again, what else would you expect from a musician with a PhD in Mathematics?
