Fox 2000 executives are courting Glee creator/producer/ writer/director Ryan Murphy for a proposed remake of the classic midnight movie, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. The 1975 musical starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Meat Loaf and Barry Bostwick became a cult hit earning millions of dollars largely through midnight screenings of the film. Fox wants to recapture that magic, (and cash) with a new version for younger generations of film fans. Murphy has reportedly met with executives but no decision has been made. It might be awhile before he has space on his calendar for a new project. In addition to running Glee, Murphy is set to direct the film version of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, the long delayed adaptation of his play originally written and produced at the height of the AIDS crisis in 1985. Kramer has struggled to get the film version produced for the last 25 years and was furious when Barbra Streisand backed out of production of the film in the early nineties. The Normal Heart is scheduled to start filming in the spring with Mark Ruffalo starring.
Murphy also a deal for a follow up project with his Eat, Pray, Love star Julia Roberts. The two hit it off during the filming of that project and Murphy is set to write and direct a comedy for the star. With this amount of work, it could be spring 2012 before the director is free to film a new “Rocky Horror”.
Ryan Murphy, center, in a Britney/Brittany sammitch. |
I don’t have a problem with the idea of a remake, or Ryan Murphy directing the remake, but what scares me is WHO or WHAT they will cast in this… I have visions of bland, dull tween stars like Justin Bieber getting signed up to play Frank-n-furter. That would not only be disgusting, but sacrilegious to ALL “Rocky” fans!

Nope. Do not want. No modern twist with modern stars. Nope. They tried to do this with Fame, and we all know that was a huge mistake.
Please no! Rocky Horror is a cult classic, and any time you mess with one of those its gonna end poorly, even if its with Glee's director. No modern twist with modern characters. change is bad.
