Seattle is lucky to have the writer’s group, “Bent” as a community resource and we’re even luckier they’re alive, kicking and thriving after 10 years of existence. Help them celebrate this week at their anniversary writing showcase with guest mentor Regie Cabico. Here’s the skinny:
Celebrating our 10th anniversary as a Seattle-based queer arts organization, BENT presents Regie Cabico as this year’s showcase mentor. Regie will headline the Bent Mentor Showcase, an annual event has become a fixture within the Seattle queer arts scene, which includes a writing workshop and performances by Cabico and Bent students.
Regie is described as an “out and proud Filipino American gay man who has been called the Lady Gaga of spoken word poets.” He has won several high awards at various national slam poetry contests, has written several plays and regularly performs stand-up comedy, and has twice been featured on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam. In addition to his own work as a poet and artist, Regie is an an activist for underrepresented groups, such as the Filipino American and queer communities. He is the artistic director of Sol y Soul, an arts and activist organization for people of various backgrounds based in Washington, DC, where Cabico makes his home.
The Showcase workshop and performances are open to the public.
