Everyone’s favorite Patsy Stone, the wunnerful Joanna Lumley is currently starring on Broadway in La Bête and told Playbill in a recent interview that AbFab producer Jon Plowman is in talks with star/creator/writer Jennifer Saunders about bringing back Eddy, Patsy, Saffy and the gang for a brand new series. And, both Saunders and Lumley are apparently receptive to bringing it back.
“I’ve heard talk, too,” Lumley confessed. “Jon Plowman, who’s the executive producer, wrote to Jennifer, and Jen wrote to me before I left [England] and said, ‘Let’s talk through it. What do you think?’ And I said, ‘Bring it on.’ Because we’re all still here. Mother’s still alive – the wonderful June Whitfield. Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks – the basic five J’s – all our names began with J. We’re all still alive and available – ish – to do it, and I think we just have to do it. And the great thing is that because in our show, we fast-forwarded to where they’re very old and nearly dead and practically plugged into vodka machines and things. It doesn’t matter how beyond [the original series] we do it because we know they’ve been that, that they still were Patsy and Edina at the time. So this makes it heaven!”
No details or confirmation has been made from Saunders, Plowman or the BBC on when this could happen.
I have to admit, I’m of two minds about this. Like 98% of the gay world, I’m a HUGE fan of Absolutely Fabulous but the last series wasn’t really very good…the plots and jokes were getting a bit stale. I’m hopeful about the potential for a new series but leery of the result. AND, they probably need to introduce a new character or two to freshen things up…and, a plot twist, like Patsy gets married or Saffy goes off the deep end or Eddy is running for Parliament. Something ODD.
