Actress Amber Heard and her girlfriend, Tasya van Rees. |
The webs are atwitter over actress Amber Heard’s appearance at the GLAAD 25th Anniversary Gala in Los Angeles last Friday with her girlfriend, artist Tasya van Rees and her official “Coming Out” announcement. That’s great and all; it’s important for EVERY LGBTQ person to be free enough to be out, and especially important when it’s the “famous”…it’s a great example for everyone else struggling with the process. But, it’s also a little odd that celebrities are required to make a formal, public announcement about their sexuality even when they’re not living a closeted life. Ms Heard, the star of Zombieland and Pineapple Express has appeared publicly with Ms van Rees for the last couple of years and they were in a Prop 8 rally together this summer and posed for photos. It doesn’t appear that she’s ever played the “Hollywood Hide n Seek” game by lying about her sexuality and “dating” men…she’s lived an honest life. Why do we require honest people to make public declarations? We don’t require STRAIGHT celebrities to stand up at the Oscars and declare, “I’m James Cameron and I really like vagina!” It seems disrespectful to the honest LGBTQ men and women who have open lives.
Now, it’s a different story for the truly closeted and those who’ve been actively playing the Hollywood Game. Those folks NEED to make a public declaration. I need to hear, “I’m J— G——— and I like the pole, and not the hole!” They need to come clean.
And, congrats to Ms Heard and Ms van Rees. May they have a long and happy life.
