Frequently, queer people of color get the short of the stick when it comes to events. Let’s face it; Seattle LIKES to think that it’s incredibly diverse and multi-hued but in reality, we’re pretty damn white bread. (Anyone who’s lived in another large US city, can understand this…I’ve lived in Minneapolis and Kansas City and both of them are FAR more brilliantly hued than the Emerald City and they’re in the Midwest!) So, it pleases me that I can occasionally report that there are entertainment options for our readers of non-Northern European ancestry. Here’s some choices for tonight.
The Faire Gallery & Cafe at 1351 East Olive Way on Capitol Hill is hosting a new event, “Soul-Fi” squarely aimed at the POC/Queer crowd. This is what their Facebook page has to say about the new event:
SOUL-Fi is a culturally and musically queer soul night for POCs , snow bunnies, milky lads, and all lovers of soul music. DjGeneralMeow will be laying down funk/soul/neo-soul/RnB/jazz/mash-up tracks that make you forget what decade it is, in a good way of course. We’re bringing the funk to Seattle at Faire Gallery Cafe. Drink specials at the bar, fly soul thumping beats from moi, and a warm hate-free safe zone for you to boogie down in. What more can you ask for?
The par-tay starts tonight, Saturday, December 18 at 9pm.
We’ve mentioned it once this week, but it’s worthy of another shout-out…the very special and talented Miz Ginger Snapz is producing her annual holiday show The Wiz and it features an amazing line-up of talent.
It’s The Wiz, but with more titties and drag!
Buy your tickets early (before the price goes up) for “The Wiz: A Queer and POC Burlesque Tribute.” We did it the first time in June 2009 and it’s time to do it again. They’ll be some old performers, some new performers and ALL NEW ACTS!
This is the Winter 2010 Remix which means we’re mixing it up from last time. Every performer is doing a new act.
Whether you saw the show last year, or missed it, this is THE show to see this Winter! It was the talk of the town in 2009 and we plan on wow-ing you again.
Starring local favorites: Adraboo, Jacqueline Hyde, Cherry Tart, Pigeon Von Tramp, Lili Delight, Femnomena, Devo,

Dancer/Actor Bojohn Diciple in flight; from his website. |
And, finally, if you’re looking for more spiritual enlightenment, head to The Moore Theatre for the yearly production of Black Nativity. Featuring the “poetry of Langston Hughes, the beauty of gravity-defying choreography by Spectrum Dance’s Donald Byrd, the voices of Pastor Patrinell Wright and her choir of gospel singers, and that rockin’ live band!” It’s a lovely show, (I saw it last week; review to come) and the first act is Langston Hughes’ one act presentation of Black Nativity, which is very much skewed towards People of Color, but the second act is a facsimile of “black chuch” geared towards non African American audiences so there’s something for everyone. AND, amazing dancing by some very talented dancers, including Bojohn Diciple as Joseph.
Lots of options for EVERYONE tonight! Have a happy, safe night of fun!
