I’m a fair-weather Oprah watcher, I must admit. I’ll watch that annual Christmas gift episode where she tries to kill her audience with custom diamond watches, cashmere sweaters and trips to exotic locales – that is, if they can make it through the show without stroking out or experiencing complete cardiac failure before it’s over. I’ll also watch when musical guests that I like are performing. And on days like today, I’ll set the DVR to watch later, because it’s a gay show!
From Oprah.com:
In a landmark interview, an iconic athlete told the world he’s gay. Now, Greg Louganis is back. Plus, the world’s only openly gay prince has big news.
That’s pretty vague… but, Greg Louganis (who was portrayed in a Showtime Movie by the too-hot-to-be-real Mario Lopez!) has been out of the public eye for a while since first appearing on Oprah in 1996, but apparently all he’s done is get greyer and cuter since his Olympic glory days. He was diagnosed with HIV in 1988, and was one of the earliest celebrities to not only come out as gay, but also to reveal his HIV+ status, then thumb his nose at the bigots who counted him out, and dared to survive.
Also appearing with some sort of big news is Manvendra Singh Gohil, prince-in-name-only of the “former princely state of Rajpipla” in western India. He appeared on Oprah in 2007 – he’s the only out, gay prince in the world – though hopefully one day more royalty will throw open that closet door. I mean, how many gay men do you know that would be really good at being married to a prince? Other than all of them? Any guesses as to what the big news will be? He’s found an awesome life partner and are planning to start adopting? He’s decided to abdicate his entirely ceremonial title? He’s eschewing the turban in favor of something “a little less gay”?
Check out Oprah today at 4pm on some network channel that I never can remember until I flip around the channels and stumble on it. Channel 5 maybe? It’s one of those single numbers, I’m pretty sure.
