Event Description: 3-day, 60 mile walk to raise breast cancer awareness and funding for research, education, screening, and treatment.
Team Name: Areola Borealis
Team Organizer: Michi Suzuki
Michi’s Profile:
As many of you may (or may not know), I was diagnosed with breast cancer this past October. I have been undergoing radiation for the past 6 1/2 weeks and will have my last treatment on March 5th. Once radiation is complete, I will begin my hormone replacement therapy for the next 5 years. This has truly been an emotional and empowering experience for me over the past several months. I’ve always wanted to do this walk, and now more than ever, I am incredibly inspired to take this 3-day, 60-mile journey. Partially for my own personal reasons, but even more so, for those that are unable to walk it, or for those that are no longer here with us. Everyday when I come home from treatment all I want to do is take a nap from the fatigue or soak my arm pit and my breast area in an ice bath from the sunburn like pain and blistering under my pit, but instead, I think about all the people that share the same waiting room as me with their stints in their chests waiting for their chemo treatment, or the young woman that uses her walker because the cancer has spread, or the guy who often sits next to me telling me that he hopes radiation will indeed shrink his brain tumor. I think about all of those people and the people that are no longer alive, and I lace up my shoes and take my ass down to the lake to walk, walk, walk. So now, I turn to all of you and ask for your support as I take an amazing journey in the fight against breast cancer! Net proceeds from this 3-day, 60-mile event benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment. Thank you in advance from the bottom of my heart!
Much love,
Michi
