This is the final week of the final stop for one of the most hilarious and surprisingly fun Broadway shows touring America right now. After Sunday you will not be able to see this version of The Drowsy Chaperone again in Seattle, or anywhere for that matter, after it completes its long 31-city tour here in Seattle at the 5th Avenue Theatre.
I had the opportunity to see it and was not quite sure what to expect but was I ever impressed with this show. First, it is entertaining from beginning to end. With some plays, at some point, you may feel bored, distracted or just plain “drowsy” BUT with this one I remained alert and enthralled with Drowsy Chaperone throughout the entire performance even with the surprise of going without an intermission.
Jonathon Crombie is so likable as the “bachelor” known only as the “Man in Chair”, a character who’s love for musicals is someone that many, including myself, can easily identify with. It is a play within a play or as they call it “a musical within a comedy.” His commentary about his favorite vinyl record, the 1928 soundtrack from “Drowsy Chaperone”, and even his comments about the play itself you are watching, are both witty and laugh-out-loud silly. It is no wonder it was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards in 2006 and won the most awards that year of any musical on Broadway.
I bet you couldn’t find anyone, young or old, that went away from this performance and was not entertained from beginning to end. Some critics are even saying that this touring version is better than the Broadway version, which unfortunately I never got to see. So I urge you to not let this final opportunity pass you by. I see that a few tickets do still remain through Sunday November 16, 2008. More info about the play and remaining tickets is available here.
I just saw The Drowsy Chaperone last night and loved it! I agree that all should go see it before it closes!
