Gay-friendly Seattle still requires caution

August 23, 2007• bySeattle Gay Scene

Despite the fact that Seattle is such a gay-friendly city it is imperative that visitors still remain cautious as they traverse the streets particularly in the late hours after the bars close down. The Seattle PI reported about a recent attack in Belltown and the Seattle Gay News reported what they are calling a “rash” of gay bashings. A total of 5 reported over this summer. The incidents typically involve a slur, an altercation and subsequent assault. Even a short conversation when questioned about one’s sexual orientation has provoked assaults. Perceived sexual orientation is protected by Washington State’s hate crime laws but reportedly the officer in the Belltown case did not mention the gay slurs in his police report. Seattle’s King County offers information on hate crimes and important safety tips.

With the rapid and comprehensive integration of gays with non-gays from throughout city, the suburbs and even the rural areas there is bound to be a few individuals not accustomed to interacting with the gay population and alcohol only adds fuel to bias feelings. As in every city, always be cautious and aware of your surroundings.
