Federally funded Salvation Army scrutinized for “witch hunts” against gay employees

December 2, 2008• byBill W

This big issue today over at the Daily Kos. The Salvation Army is “insanely homophobic” but NPR reminds us that they are desperately looking for your donation of coins all over the city this holiday season (while your tax dollars supported 95% of their budget). But before you unload the pocket full of change read this.

As part of President Bush’s “faith-based initiative,” US taxpayers gave the Salvation Army’s children services division $47 million this year — 95% of its total budget. Several Salvation Army employees refused to take the Salvation Army’s pledge “proclaiming Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord,” reveal which church they belong to or identify gay co-workers — and were summarily fired.

Local discussion over at The Stranger Slog.
