Idaho lawmakers deny gays protection in employment, education and housing

February 23, 2009• byBill W

Just across our state’s border, Idaho lawmakers on the Senate State Affairs Committee decided that gays and lesbians should not be protected in their employment, education and housing leaving open the risk that state residents could be legally denied housing or fired from their jobs strictly based on their sexual orientation.

The measure to add sexual orientation and gender identity to Idaho’s 1968 Human Rights Act was co-sponsored by Charles Coiner, a Republican from Twin Falls.

“Their movement is a few years behind but it’s moving forward,” Coiner said. “We’ve got work to do.”

Sen. Nicole LeFavour, D-Boise, the state’s only openly gay lawmaker…said there are more than 40,000 gay, lesbian and transgendered people in Idaho.

Despite the setback at least four Idaho cities have passed their own laws protecting gay and lesbians city workers: Troy, Ketchum, Moscow and Boise.
