(My costume of choice while viewing the Awards Presentation…not pictured: my bags of Trader Joe goodies.)
Two weeks from LAST night (I started this post Sunday night but was sidetracked by The Amazing Race) we can be assured of two things: millions of people will be watching the Academy Awards and many of these same people will be online live-blogging on whether or not Mo’Nique shaved her legs for the Oscars…both are equally important pop culture milestones in our feeble, mortal lives and Seattle Gay Scene wants to be your source for information on all local, queer-friendly Oscar watching events and parties. Otherwise you could end up at home, alone with your cat and a bowl of Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Covered Pretzels and that would just be sad…
The biggest of our local parties, and now in its fifth year, would have to be the orgy of delight thrown by the folks at Three Dollar Cinema and Gay City at SoDo Park (3200 First Ave South) starting at 4.30pm for general admission and 3.30pm if you spring for the fancier VIP tickets. Here’s all the ticket info on the two options.
Tickets:
General $25 – You’ll watch the Oscars on our big screens, enjoy hors d’oeuvres throughout the evening, and even get an entry to win some fantastic door prizes!
VIP $40 – VIPs enjoy the regular party, PLUS early admission for a hosted VIP Champagne & Wine Reception, premium seating, and an Oscar Gift Bag!Three Dollar Bill Cinema members: $2 discount on all ticket prices. Tickets are $5 more at the door.
21 and over only event.
This is for a good cause, it’s reported to be a lot of fun, and it’s likely to be one of the swankier Oscar parties of the night…I hear people like to get dressed up for this one and if they squint hard enough, they can imagine they’re at the big Elton John or Vanity Fair parties in LA…but with a lot less Botox. To buy tickets, go here.
Also on the swankier side and also benefitting a good cause, is the 2nd Annual Reel Grrls Oscar Party at Central Cinema. Reel Grrls is a wonderful group dedicated to offering workshops in filmmaking to teenage girls from diverse communities while providing them with mentorship and guidance and growth opportunities. To find out more about their programs, go to the website. As for their Oscar Party, it also sounds pretty amazing. Tickets also start at $25 but higher priced packages include these food options:
Omnivore Prix Fixe Dinner – $79 – includes:
Creamy cauliflower soup with Brazil nut pesto and puff pastry poppyseed twists
Arugula salad with orange and caramelized fennel
Pineapple cardamom roasted chicken with potato fontina gratin
Pear claufotis with St. Germain cream
plus a glass of champagne (tax and gratuity included)Vegetarian Prix Fixe Dinner – $79 – includes:

Yum! All this food, plus glamorous ladies in pretty dresses at the fantastic Central Cinema…sign me up. For ticket info, go here.
For folks who can’t quite afford the pricier fundraiser Oscar events, there are options for your threadbare wallets. Purr and the SGN are teaming up for a night of Oscar Baiting…the event is free of charge, they’ll be a “Guess the Oscar Winners Contest” with prizes and hopefully some decent drink specials that won’t end up costing you more than if you’d gone to one of the big benefit parties…
A little more basic bar time fun can be had at R Place…their fun starts early, at 2pm, with drink specials all night including all Absolut cocktales…and, according to the RSVP list both Bill W AND Cole Ryan will be there which instantly dispels the myth that they are one and the same person…Urban Legends die hard.
Your final option for Oscar Night? Talk a friend with a fabulous city view apartment, cable, and an extensive cocktail cabinet to throw a small intimate gala for 7…I’ll see you Sunday at 4.30 for the Red Carpet Show!
We’ll have more Oscar coverage as we get closer to the date and I’ll offer some predictions…on who will lose, who might win, and which Oscar nominee is most likely to be drunk…
