Olé! Olé! Olé! Part Dos: Ricky Martin Comes Out!

March 29, 2010• byMichael Strangeways

He come out today in an emotional and moving statement on his website. Here’s a quote and you can read more at Towleroad.

A few months ago I decided to write my memoirs, a project I knew was going to bring me closer to an amazing turning point in my life. From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time. Things that were too heavy for me to keep inside. Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth. And this is something worth celebrating.

I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.

I would normally make a smartass remark like, “D’uh!” or “Tell me something I didn’t know, honey!” or “Pass me another Gimlet!” or snarkily comment on the millions of fortysomething women around the world sobbing into their hankies, “NOOOOOOOO! It’s just not true!!!”, but I’m so much larger than that. So, all I’ll say is: Good for him, the best of luck to Ricky and his adorable little gay family. Also, it couldn’t hurt to have a gay, Latino role model for Latin America and the world.

About the Author: Michael Strangeways

As the Editorial Director/Co-Owner, Michael Strangeways writes, edits and does about a million other jobs for Seattle Gay Scene, Puget Sound's most visited LGBTQ news, arts and entertainment website now celebrating its 14th year as a media outlet. A semi-proud Midwesterner by birth, he's lived in Seattle since 2000. He's also a film producer who would like you to check out the Jinkx Monsoon documentary, "Drag Becomes Him" now available on Amazon.com. In his spare time, he gets slightly obsessive about his love for old movies, challenging theater, "otters", vodka, chocolate, "I,Claudius", Lizzie Borden, real books made out of paper, disaster films, show tunes, Weimar era Germany, flea markets, pop surrealistic art, the sex lives of Hollywood actors both living and dead, kitties, chicken fried steak, haute couture and David Bowie. But, not necessarily in that order.
