If you’re a film nerd who thinks SIFF is too commercial, then you’ll want to check out the Seattle TRUE Independent Film Festival, aka, STIFF, the alternative fest to SIFF, and now in its 6th year. Dozens of very indie films will be screening during the 9 day festival at the Jewel Box Theater @ The Rendezvous, (2320 2nd Ave in Belltown); Central Cinema, (1411 21st Ave in the Central District); and Northwest Film Forum, (1515 12th Ave on Capitol Hill) with live shows at the Jewel Box, El Corazon, and The Showbox at the Market.
Some of the films on view include Wes Hurley’s documentary on local burlesque star, Waxie Moon which screens June 6 @ 4pm and June 8 @ 7:45pm at the Jewel Box; at first glance, it seems like Jason’s Big Problem is his “micropenis” but a radical new medical treatment solves that tiny problem and creates new problems with the “monster in his pants”…it screens June 8 @ 9:30pm at NWFF. Of special interest for the queer community, director Kaitlin Meelia’s Play in the Gray is
An intimate look at identity, sexuality, love, and performance art. Play in the Gray shakes the foundation of gender stereotypes by exploring the work and personal lives of a Boston drag-based theatre troupe, ALL THE KINGS MEN (ATKM).
It screens Wednesday, June 9 at 7pm at Central Cinema.
And, who doesn’t love locally made horror films that pay hommage to “The Blair Witch Project”? Eyes in the Dark was filmed in the Cascades with a local cast, local director, (Bjorn Anderson) and locally photographed by the superginormously talented Jody Cole. Scarier than a crate of Tea-baggers, the film will screen Saturday, June 5 at 7:45pm at the Jewel Box Theater at the Rendezvous. Check it out, and other films and event that are guaranteed to make you STIFF with excitement and awe.
