Once you have determine that Starbucks in Seattle is no different then in your hometown you must visit some the many excellent gay friendly coffee houses in Seattle. While many of the restaurants on this site offer good espresso drinks, here is a short list of some of the unique and favorite coffee houses specifically on Capitol Hill. All these places have free wireless unless otherwise stated.
VICTROLA is an excellent destination for your coffee craving and our top pick of espresso houses.
At their location on 15th Ave, coffee meets art and music, which regulars often refer to as the “living room of Capitol Hill.”
Music events at 8 pm on Thursday and other weekdays.
The Cappuccino was so smooth and creamy it didn’t even need any sugar. Their pre-made sandwichs ($6.25) are very popular. The internet is turned off on weekends at the 15th Ave location.
Their other location on Pike Street serves beer and wine “to mellow your coffee buzz” as well as hosting a weekly coffee tasting on Wednesday at 1 pm.
Pike Street has internet everyday.
(Open till 11 pm)
CAFFE VITA is also high on our list. The place is an icon and located on Pike Street in the heart of the action. Excellent espresso, however, the pastries here are nothing special. They have a few outdoor tables with more seats upstairs which can get crowded and feel a bit stuffy. Downstairs is more airy but busier. (Open till 11 pm)
ESPRESSO VIVACE (on Denny Street at Broadway) is also at the top of the list. You can sip your java while viewing the nearby park. If you need quiet time the separate glass enclosed Roasters Room may suite your needs. They also have a take-out branch on Broadway (right across the street from Broadway Grill) with 3 outdoor tables that are eternally full. Internet may be shut down on weekends. (Open till 11 pm)
CAFÉ LADRO on 15th Ave is a small Seattle area chain with excellent organic coffee drinks. Stop in while you are waiting for your table for brunch at Coastal Kitchen. Good wi-fi speed. (Open till 10 pm Fri/Sat and 9 pm on other days)
B&O was one of our choices for breakfast, despite the slow service on weekends, but that should not prevent you from enjoying their excellent coffee drinks. Certainly deserves to be in the top 5 for espresso drinks. The internet is turned off on weekends. (Open till 1 am Fri/Sat and midnight other days)
BAUHAUS COFFEE for years was a gay meeting spot and they still do good coffee if you are in the area. Located on Pine Street a few blocks from downtown. (Open till 1 am)
LIBERTY BAR is “Liberty AM” from 7 am till 4 pm serving espresso with free hi-fi internet access.
Here are a couple of places the offer actual computers to access the internet free for 30 minutes with purchase:
Online Coffee Company on Olive Way near Broadway. (Open till 1 am)
Online Coffee Company on Pine Street and 14th Ave. (Next to Poco Wine Room and just one block from The Cuff) (Open till midnight/10 pm winter hours)
Along with Victrola’s famous sandwiches and B&O’s full menu here are a couple of places serving more then pastries:
If you are on the north end of Broadway Ave you might stop by JOE BAR . They serve some excellent coffee along with some light food which includes delicious crepes and pananis.
CAFÉ PRESSE offers some light but excellent and relatively inexpensive French cuisine in a classy yet casual and bright environment. And after all who does coffee better than the French? No wi-fi.
UPDATE: Some of the best coffee in Portland comes to Seattle. Stumptown Coffee recently opened next to Cafe Presse. Here is a recent article in the Seattlest. The location attracts primarly Seattle University students it worth mentioning when serious coffee house opens.
