Idaho AFA says Alaska Airlines charges “surcharge” for the “sexually normal”

November 29, 2007• bySeattle Gay Scene

The Idaho chapter of the American Family Association, in another misguided complaint against a wonderfully responsible company, says Alaska Airlines offers special deals unavailable to those who are sexually normal. (Because as we all know social ultra conservatives are all “sexually normal”) First, just about every airline has a site dedicated to the GLBT population. Second, Alaska Airlines runs a lot of different 10% off specials targeted at various groups, fairs, and special events. Lastly, the special does not require that you are gay in order to purchase the airfare. AFA members should feel free to go right ahead and book the special. I felt conflicted in even giving any attention to this but hoped readers could show their support by purchasing their next Alaska Airlines flight at: http://www.alaskaair.com/as/alaska/gaytravel/toc.asp
I think I will in go now and purchase an upcoming weekend getaway.

UPDATE Since having a quick mention by Dan Savage on the Strangers Newspaper’s SLOG (Thank you Dan), Robin Evans over at seaQwa provided a little more insight into the matter. Unfortunately, the story is being written about by mostly conservative print media outlets. Of course there are many different 10% off discount codes for Alaska Airlines out there targeting all kinds of different groups but this only becomes an issue when it is on a website targeting gays even though anyone can use the code.

God bless them, they can’t even have their math right. A 10% discount does not equate to a 10% premium the other way around. Say the ticket was $100. A 10% discount makes it $90. If you want say there is a 10% premium, that would only be $9 or $99 total. It would actually be an 11.1% premium for being “normal”.

I feel physically sick after reading those articles on the IVA website. Its just biased ignorance at its worst. Not a single one of those arguments would hold up in even a high school level of debate. The conclusions are far-fetched and blatantly ignore facts by cherry picking information and drawing conclusions that are so simplistic that a first grader would call them dumb. These people are just so wretched I would actually pity them if I didn’t realize that they are voting and affecting the world we live in. I wish their “Rapture” would just come and take their butts up to heaven and leave the earth to the rest of us!

Yeah, well I wouldn’t say that Alaska’s PRIDE is showing. Try to find that “deal” off the main page or even the all deals page.

    Good luck.

If you don’tknow the “secret” gay link for Alaska’s closet you don’t know where it is at all.

Why offer this stuff if you;re going to closet it.

Sort of not the point, is it?

So instead of the standard miniscule fault finding and rapture blather with orgainizations that don’t count, I’d be onto Alaska to ask them what they are ashamed of.

    That’s the bigger issue here.

Hey guys. What does religion have to do with this subject? I thought it was about homosexuality?
