No More Sugar. Sweet.
Photo is outside what was formerly Sugar bar on Capitol Hill, which had changed from its gay format a while back before eventually shutting down for good. Kincora, the primarily straight but hip rock bar, was forced out of its original location by the same condo development that also forced out Pony Bar and Manray. The owners and management of Kincora have started King Cobra, which opened this weekend.
I expect the bar to be primarily targeted toward non-gay patrons (nothing against straight bars or anything). However, they do look to expand beyond the standard hard rock format with DJ’s (such as DJ Mama Casserole) and actual dancing before they try to fill their calendar with all kinds of live music, comedy shows, and special events. Maybe a future gay event is in the works for King Cobra.
I admit I am very glad that Sugar is gone, but I can’t believe that another bar is trying to open up in the same place. There have been so many bars opened in that location, one begins to wonder if it is cursed.
That place just needs to be vacated by bars and clubs altogether and some retailer should take it over.
Cursed is pretty accurate (at least up until now). Not to mention places Neumos and Chop Suey already stage live concerts. But it looks like they will try to cater to very diverse crowds depending on the event and maybe with the Croc closing there will be more live shows available. I could think of a lot of things I would rather not see in the space.
