ArtsWest presents the Seattle Premiere of bare: a gripping, provocative pop opera about seniors in a private Catholic school struggling with first love, sexuality, and religion. Performed by participants in ArtsWest’s award-winning Musical Theater Apprenticeship Program. The Musical Apprenticeship Program gives the young participants their first taste of the professional theater world.
A cross between Rent and Dead Poet’s Society, bare tells of the relationship among a group of friends, focusing on the secret lives of awkward altar boy Peter and his roommate, the “golden boy” Jason. The show’s creators, Damon Intrabartolo and Jon Hartmere Jr., based bare on their own high school experiences.
“Suicide is the third largest cause of death in teens in the country.” say ArtsWest’s director Christopher Zinovitch, “I hope by bringing this production to the Seattle stage we will give students the power to talk about how they feel, and open communication lines for the participants in the program as well as our audience.”
The ArtsWest production of bare runs July 10-26 and will be directed by Zinovitch and Nick DeSantis (I Am My Own Wife) with music direction by Jackie Koreski. ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery, 4711 California Avenue SW, Seattle. $15 or $10 for under 25.
