Icon to Appear at the King Cat Theater for a 20th Anniversary Screening of ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK.
The 2008 Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival kicks off Halloween and wraps up its 13th year with an appearance by Elvira at a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark on Sunday, October 26. Elvira will be interviewed by drag phenomenon Peaches Christ to open the evening. The festival’s closing gala, The Black Cat Ball will take place at the Pan Pacific Hotel immediately after the screening.
Actress Cassandra Peterson created the character Elvira with the help of her gay best friend, makeup artist and costume designer Robert Redding. After making her debut in 1981 as host of “Movie Macabre” on KHJ-TV in Los Angeles, Elvira went on to appear in over 50 films and television shows. A tireless promoter of gay rights and AIDS awareness, Elvira has appeared in gay pride parades around the world and has donated proceeds from her appearances to support related organizations and causes.
The festival winds to a close after opening with a near-capacity crowd, lined up around the block of the Cinerama Theatre for Were the World Mine, an enchanting new musical with a love story spun around Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Nights’s Dream.” The excitement continued with a packed house for the world premiere of For My Wife… a powerful documentary that tells of the tragic death of artist Kate Fleming and her partner Charlene Strong’s struggles in dealing with the aftermath.
Still lots of movies remain for the weekend. Don’t miss them!
