The documentary film This Land is Our Land: A Chorus Tour of the Rocky Mountain States, featuring Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus, was nominated for two 2009 Emmy Award in the Best Documentary-Topical Category, and the Outstanding Reporting/Talent Category.
This Land is Our Land: A Chorus Tour of the Rocky Mountain States recounts the unforgettable summer road taken by a courageous group of Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus singers through the Northern Rockies to the “Red States” of Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.
They know in their hearts and minds that music is a powerful source for human justice, and this proud family of over 250 chorus members purposefully travelled to towns and cities where their values and beliefs are not traditionally embraced. Together they did more than just sing a few concerts and entertain a few folks. They spread their vision of a world that accepts and values gay and lesbian citizens. They put a face on the gay community in areas starved for their message. This life-changing Rocky Mountain Tour was scary for some, awkward for others. But it also educated and unified audiences while bringing a sense of pride to those select chorus members returning home to a native land without a strong gay and lesbian support system.
Award recipients will be announced on May 30, 2009 at the 46th Annual Regional Emmy Awards Dinner at the Snoqualmie Casino.
The Seattle Men’s Chorus Singing… In the Rain concert back in March featured stage and screen icon Debbie Reynolds. The Chorus holds their biggest fundraising gala of the year, Hairspray, this Saturday April 18 at Washington State’s Convention and Trade Center. The Seattle Men’s Chorus next concert Unplugged is June 19-21, the weekend before Seattle Pride.
