Susan Hutchison, candidate for King County Executive and closet Republican, recently said that the state should “stay away from the very contentious issue of gay marriage that has permeated the country.” More details are here.
Hutchison is a member of the University Presbyterian Church, a mega-church in the University District, which among other things, fired Deacon Peter Benson for being gay.
Back as recent as 2007, Hutchison was once a board member of the Discover Institute which is known for its advocacy of intelligent design and its campaign to teach creationist anti-evolution beliefs in public high schools.
According to The Stranger, Hutchison has given thousands of dollars to Republicans over the years including Mike Huckabee and George W. Bush but she will be able to hide her party affiliation in this upcoming election.
Hutchison was one of the leading proponents of last year’s Initiative 26, which allowed Republicans to hide their party affiliation in liberal King County by making all King County offices “nonpartisan.”
As a former TV anchor, Hutchison has tremendous name familiarity and currently leads all candidates by a large margin to take on the role of King County Executive vacated by Ron Sims. She leads in a recent poll with 39% of primary voters. Dow Constantine is a very distant 2nd place at just 12%.
