Today, Sunday August 30, 2009, the Seattle Tennis Alliance held a Team Tennis round robin singles “Calcutta” style tournament. It was called “The Greatest Bestest Singles Player in the Whole Wide World.” It was held at the Volunteer Park upper courts. The “Calcutta” tournament, means that all players are handicapped allowing different levels to play together competitively for a final all-around winner and consolation winner. Gail Benzler, the STA Vice-President, was the coordinator of the well organized event, and fun allowed and enjoyed by all. The players were part of the Team Tennis that the Seattle Tennis Alliance holds each year in August. This year we had 4 teams rather than 8 which allowed the time for this Sunday to hold a different style event with the players from the Team Tennis teams. Sixteen STA members participated in the event which was held from 9am to 3pm. We were given 15 minutes from 8:45am to 9:00am to get warmed up as there was no more warm up after that point. Each match was ping pong style scoring with the winner reaching 18 points. We played six rounds against other players and the best of the six rounds led to the best eight players for a single elimination round which narrowed down to the last two standing and the finals. The finals was a 25 point match allowing for more of the great competitive tennis between the final two. Troy Maravilla and Brant Lyerla were in the finals with Troy winning the day tournament, becoming “The Greatest Bestest Singles Player in the Whole Wide World.”
