Use Your Furry Face to Raise Money for Local Foster Kids

January 5, 2010• bySeattle Gay Scene

Does your face display a handlebar, goatee, Fu Manchu, walrus, or other form of fun and fabulous facial hair? If sporting a furry face is your style, then the Beard & Stache Fest is for you! Seattle non-profit The World is Fun invites you to compete alongside contestant Mayor McGinn in the second annual beard and mustache competition to benefit Treehouse, a non-profit that improves the lives of Seattle’s children in foster care. Treehouse helps 15,000 foster children overcome the obstacles they have everyday by giving them money for extra-curricular activities and summer camp, and providing free clothing and supplies to help them fit in at school.

The month-long competition to raise money for foster children officially begins on Sunday, January 31, 2010, with a kick-off party at Blue C Sushi in Fremont. The first 100 attendees will receive gift bags containing goodies to keep their beards and mustaches looking svelte, as well as other treats if they are sporting faux facial hair. Mustachioed or bearded men – and women (who are encouraged to don a fake mustache) – are welcome to attend.

Each of the 100 participants will have their photo displayed on a donation can at the kick-off party. After the party the cans will travel in teams of five to businesses throughout Seattle from Pioneer Square to Ballard. Patrons of these businesses will be able to simultaneously cast their vote for best beard or mustache and donate to Treehouse by placing money in these cans throughout the month of February. Winners will be selected based on the total money raised in each can during the month.

The event will wrap up on Sunday, February 28, 2010 with a not-to-be-missed Awards Gala at Rock Salt on Lake Union. Participants and their supporters, are welcome to attend with gift bags given to the first 100 attendees. Winners will be announced, and prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third-place beard and/or mustache, as well as best team of five.

Here are some of the events coming in February:

  • Feb 5: “Sing Your Stache Off” – A karaoke night at Ozzie’s in Queen Anne where participants can challenge their friends to sing with the proceeds going to charity.
  • Feb 7: “The Wifflebowl” – A friendly, no athletic skills required charity wiffleball tournament at Cal Anderson Park, with a special pre-game brunch and post-game party.
  • Feb 12: “Abe Lincoln’s Birthday Bash” A beard and mustache themed costume dance party at the Rendezvous to celebrate old Abe’s 201st Birthday.
  • Feb 14: “Lover’s Quarrel Cardboard Tube Fight” A chance to duel it out cardboard tube style. An all ages event at Cal Anderson Park.
