Your Daily SIFF: She’s not Ugly and she’s coming to SIFF; America Ferrera promotes The Dry Land this weekend

May 25, 2010• byMichael Strangeways

The very lovely to look at America Ferrera and Ryan O’Nan in The Dry Land, screening Saturday at Harvard Exit.

Her show got cancelled but our Ugly Betty favorite, Miss America Ferrera will be in town for the screening of her new film, The Dry Land. Also on hand will be director Ryan Piers Williams and co-star Ryan O’Nan for the debut screening on Saturday, May 29 at 6:30pm at the Harvard Exit, 807 E Roy on Capitol Hill. (The film will also screen, at the Harvard Exit, on Monday, May 31.) It’s likely there will be a short Q/A session after the screening of the drama which focuses on a young Iraq War vet:

Fresh from a tour of duty in Iraq, James returns to his small, West Texas hometown, where he is reunited with his wife Sara (America Ferrera), his mother Martha (Melissa Leo), and best friend Michael. However, even with their support, James finds it difficult to settle back into civilian life. The cramped trailer he shares with Sara, his new job at the local meat packing plant, and his inability to remember the deadly truck explosion that sent him home, all contribute to his violent outbursts of post-traumatic stress disorder. In search of solace, he seeks out his former Army buddy, Raymond, who accompanies him on a trip to Walter Reed Medical Center to visit an injured comrade. Throughout their journey together, the men reveal the strikingly different ways they each cope with their ordeal.

With that great cast, it sounds like it’s worth checking out.

In his spare time, he gets slightly obsessive about his love for old movies, challenging theater, "otters", vodka, chocolate, "I,Claudius", Lizzie Borden, real books made out of paper, disaster films, show tunes, Weimar era Germany, flea markets, pop surrealistic art, the sex lives of Hollywood actors both living and dead, kitties, chicken fried steak, haute couture and David Bowie. But, not necessarily in that order.
