In an amazingly lopsided 8-1 ruling, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the names of individuals that signed the anti-gay Referendum 71 last year in an effort to roll back domestic partnership benefits, can be released to the public. However, anti-gay groups who backed Ref. 71 can go back to the lower courts and request a special exemption from having to release the names.
While the ruling states that the broad issue does not infringe on freedom of speech, initiatives can be reviewed on a case-by-case basis so anti-gay groups will get yet another opportunity to make their individual case of potential threats and harassment to the lower court before the names are finally released.
