It was set to be the unveiling of Unicorn Booty’s all new website. The video premiere to launch it was held at Lobby Bar in Seattle just last night. But the relaunch is now delayed in the wake of last night’s controversy.
The full video and controversy is featured today at Queerty. EMI has pulled the video despite the fact that many other cover versions exist on YouTube. Unicorn Booty co-founder Kevin Farrell is crying foul and had the following to say.
In this age of Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus fan videos with 6 million hits, played live at concerts for the very stars themselves, we couldn’t imagine EMI taking umbrage with us creating a fan tribute to their biggest star, gay icon, Katy Perry. The video was removed by EMI for copyright infringement, yes, but only our video was removed. Dozens, if not hundred of videos remain up featuring the exact track we used. Some videos even have as many as 100,000 views! EMI selectively targeted our video featuring a group of gay men for removal.
And if they had pulled the video merely because the performance looked so embarrassing for the participants then there would be few videos left on YouTube.
Now Perez Hilton is talking about too.
