For Art’s Sake: Blitz! the Capitol Hill Artwalk is tonight and Glen Barr at Roq LaRue tomorrow (Friday the 9th)!

July 8, 2010• byMichael Strangeways

It’s nice out…after you get off work treat yourself to a walk down Pike/Pine/Broadway/15th/Olive and check out some of the great art on display in various galleries, bars, restaurants and retail stores. (Also, have a refreshing drink or two…you’re walking so it’s ok to get a little buzzed…) Yep, it’s the second Thursday of the month which means it’s time for Blitz, the Capitol Hill Artwalk and there are some great shows up this month. Make sure you check out Bette Burgoyne’s show, Transillumination at Vermillion (1508 11th Ave):

Transillumination is a series of work by Bette Burgoyne where she uses white Prismacolor pencil on black paper to create an ethereal landscape of shapes. She says, “Each drawing is a reinterpretation and combination of observations made from looking at many things; clouds, rocks, erosion, light, mammal ears, leaves, fur, waves, lichen and science illustrations of electromagnetic fields . The lighting in the drawings is oblique, like the light during sunset or moonrise. It is a time filled with portent and possibility, just before the night begins. Each new piece of black paper is a little dark night that I beam some light into.”

and Ghost Gallery at 504 East Denny is worth checking out for their “Action” show featuring video, sound and light installations and sculpture from Joe Gray and Dumb Eyes…also, they’ll be FOOD in their courtyard! And, Joe Bar, 810 E Roy, is hosting a group show from La Familia Gallery featuring work by Sara Everett, Zanetka Kralova Garwonski, David Hodge, Thomas Krueger and Lee Richmond that looks pretty amazing…For a full list of venues, go here! And, the Blitz afterparty is The Unicorn, 1118 East Pike Street starting at 9pm and featuring Kaleidoscopic audio and visual projections by Dumb Eyes (and prism glasses are provided!)

AND, the next night, Friday the 9th, you can head to the Roq LaRue Gallery in Belltown between 6pm and 9pm and check out the party for the opening of a new show starring Pop Surrealist Superstar Glen Barr and his “Small Epics” show. Mr Barr is scheduled to be in attendance and it should be a fun party…also featured will be a mini show with works by Eric Fortune. Here’s what Kirsten’s helpful press release had to say about the two artists:

Pop Surrealist elder statesman Glenn Barr takes over the gallery with his first major exhibition in several years, entitled “Small Epics”. Barr creates a carnivalesque dystopia rendered in smoggy ochres and inky blues depicting mythical gods and goddesses recast in a bombastic, rock and roll glamour worthy of a post apocalyptic world.

Upcoming star Eric Fortune returns to the gallery with three new labor intensive paintings, including a two works on paper and one on canvas. His dreamy, slightly foggy paintings are equal parts exquisite beauty and dark, erotic subtext.

Definitely reason enough to head down to Belltown for some art, some food, and some cool drinks…just be careful after dark; it’s been a bit rough in Belltown lately.
