Despite a slight fever I went to the Brown Derby’s production/staged reading/spoof of the John Travolta/Bee Gee’s classic film of “Saturday Night Fever” last night (Friday) at Re-bar. Hopefully, I didn’t “infect” anyone with my cold as I laughed my ass off all night long; I TRIED to cover my mouth when I laughed, but since I was drinking some strong Cuba Libres, I’m guessing the alkyhol killed all the germs…Regardless, it was ALL worth it; it’s a funny, funny show with excellent comedic performances from the usual list of suspects, (Dusty Warren as Tony “Manuere”; Nick Garrison as “Stephanie “Mangina” AND Tony’s very Sophia Petrillo-ish Grandma) and the very funny and very musically gifted Scott Shoemaker as “The Soundtrack”. Also great were MJ Sieber as Tony’s nasty priest brother, (complete with a nasty, nasty penile bulge); Imogen Love as Tony’s Mama and a number of disco floozies; Freddy Molitch as the doomed friend; Brandon Whitehead as Daddy Manure; and Kim Nyhous as Donna Pescow. As usual, Ian Bell was the consumate narrator/producer and while the dancing was divingly awful, the comedic choreography by Diana Cardiff was inspired. Highly recommended night of entertainment with a caution that this is one of the FILTHIEST Brown Derby shows I’ve seen (I’m not objecting; I love filth) so if you’re very, very PC, this might not be the show for you…then again, if you’re THAT PC, what are doing at Re-bar on a Saturday night? (Also, it didn’t seem to bother Mother Garrison, Nick’s mama who sat behind me last night and had a rip-roaring good time watching her son do horrendous things on stage!)
Saturday Night Fever wraps up its run TONIGHT (Saturday) at Re-bar…no advance tickets; it’s $16 CASH at the door which opens at 7pm but you should be there to stand in line by 6:30pm to make sure you get a good seat! Oh, and they’ve announced the NEXT Brown Derby show, set for November 11ish: Eminem’s “8Mile”! That should be off the hook…
