If you don’t appreciate and love the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) then you need to get schooled. They’ve been protecting all American’s civil rights for the last 75 years but have especially been front and center when it comes to fighting for equality for the Queer community. You can honor this fine organization by raising a toast to them TOMORROW, September 9 at the Cal Anderson Park Meadow and Shelter House between 5:30pm and 7pm. The reception is FREE to the public and will feature Trophy cupcakes, “prom” photos and much more.
As an added treat, very special guest Constance McMillen will be in attendance. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you should be aware that Ms McMillen became an instant Queer heroine earlier this year when she was denied permission to attend her Mississippi high school prom with her girlfriend. Constance stood up for her First Amendment rights and with the aid of the ACLU successfully sued the local school district. Since then, the district has implemented a policy banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, the first such policy from a public school system in Mississippi. Ms McMillen has since became a national spokesperson for LGBTQ rights with appearances on major news shows and was invited to a White House reception by President Obama. Come meet the fabulous Ms McMillen this Thursday and honor the amazing work of the ACLU.
