The legendary Joey Arias and his beloved accompanist Eliot Douglass return to the Triple Door on Tuesday, October 12 for a one night visit with their acclaimed cabaret production of “Strange Fruit”, a musical tribute/valentine to the legendary vocalist, Billie Holliday. Combining the songs of Lady Day and original compositions influenced by her, Strange Fruit has a long association with Seattle. The show’s presenter, Paula, the Swedish Housewife, has produced various incarnations of the show in Seattle since 1990 and watched it grow into a worldwide sensation with performances around the world. Tickets are still available for the show, which has drawn raves from critics including The Stranger which proclaimed, “It will blow your fu*king head open! ” (They have such potty mouths over there…)
AND, Mr Arias is hanging around Seattle for another few days because he’ll be attending the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival on Saturday, October 16 for a screening of his new film, “Arias With A Twist: The Docufantasy” which screens at 5pm at The Egyptian with a QandA to follow. Let’s read more about the film!
When legendary performance artist Joey Arias and internationally renowned puppeteer Basil Twist collaborated to make the avant-garde show “Arias with a Twist,” the result was a trip into the dreamworld imaginations of two extraordinary artists. In between jaw-droppingly beautiful scenes from the show’s world tour, this Docufantasy explores the lives and art of both Arias and Twist. Along the way, we met their friends and collaborators, including Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Klaus Nomi, Jim Henson, Keith Haring, Grace Jones, Elvira, Pee-wee Herman, Paula the Swedish Housewife, and many others. Be prepared for a groundbreaking, magical, and surreal experience!
AND, you can see BOTH the live concert at The Triple Door AND attend the film screening for one low price. The Swedish Housewife and the SLGFF have teamed up with a special offer: For $25 you can attend BOTH “Strange Fruit” AND the film screening. To take advantage, call The Triple Door Box Office, 206- 838-4333 and use the code “Holiday” when making your reservation and you will receive a voucher for the film when you attend the concert on Tuesday. Pretty amazing deal.
But, it gets better for Seattle Gay Scene readers…we’re giving away a pair of tickets to The Triple Door event! We’ll announce a trivia contest tomorrow…first person to respond wins the tickets! Check back in the morning for the contest and a chance to win!
