Hello kids, Sylvia O’Stayformore here. The folks at Seattle Gay Scene have asked me to put together a semi-regular column for their wonderful blog. So here is my disclaimer. I write like I talk…I’m scatter brained and tend to go off subject. So dear reader, if you have patience and enjoy reading a mixed bag of thoughts from a ditzy old lady, welcome reader!
Let me start out with a little explanation about the name of my column. I’ve always worked in the typing pool for my day job. As a career girl you get the best information and news from your girl friends working in the pool so there you go. I will be talking about local events, community issues, things coming up for me, groups I have joined, restaurants I have gone to and more.
Fall and winter are here and that means Sunday night is “Bowling for Boobies”. A group of us started the bowling league to help raise money for Susan G Komen. Since moving to Seattle I have found a wonderful way to meet new people is to join social groups. When the Artist asked me to join the league with him, I thought it would be a great way to fill some nights in the fall. So I agreed and have been helping with promotion and prizes for over two years. It’s also about the only time that I get to just hang out with friends and have a good time without shows and other things distracting me. The league is not too serious and we try to make sure everyone feels welcome.
We are at Imperial Lanes on Rainer. It’s kind of run down and a bit on the seedy side but the lounge is huge, they serve food and they are really nice folks. When I think of bowling leagues I think of smoke filled lanes, league shirts, middle aged folks wearing too much makeup and tight clothing, and drinking way too much. Fast forward to today and we are the middle-aged folks wearing comfortable clothes, drinking and eating too much, and monopolizing the juke box. I like this league a lot because it’s low pressure and our main reason for doing it is to have fun.
Last year I was part of a team called the Flaming Balls but this year the Italian has joined the team along with Bacon Man and Pie Man so we created a new team for us foodies. Our new team name is the Cheeze Ballz and we are all about bringing a new cheese ball each week to the bowling alley. So Sunday nights through the fall come down to the Imperial Lanes on Rainer and join us. We are always looking for someone to fill in.
A couple of weeks ago I was asked to host a benefit for Susan G Komen at Purr. Barbie, being a recent survivor, hosted the event. It was a night of Golden Girl episodes and raffle prizes. And, Barbie passed out coupons for their new Weekend Brunches. The Italian, his family and I went out to give it a try. For the Brunch, you get a Mimosa, mini scone and a lots of yummy food options all for $10.50. The food was very good, large portions and great service. It’s always nice to wake up to good food and cute servers.
Thanks for dropping by!
