More Music with Stew and The Negro Problem at The Moore…and lots of exciting local musicians

Yes, it’s that time of year. Seattle Theatre Group and The Moore Theatre have been bringing together nationally acclaimed professional musicians and up & coming young local performers for many years with their “More Music @ The Moore” annual event, a “training and performance program for selected young artists representing diverse music genres”. Past mentors for the program have included: STG Artist-in-Residence, New York based violinist, conductor and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain;Ernestine Anderson, jazz singer; Dave Dederer from The Presidents of the United States of America; R&B singer Bernadette Bascomb; local rock bandSchool Yard Heroes; Jovino Santos Neto, professor/composer/musician;Michael Shrieve, original drummer of Santana; and Alan White, drummer for Yes.

For the 2012 program, happening this Friday, March 23, 2012 at The Moore, STG has lined up Tony Award winning actor/musician/playwright Stew and his collaborator, Heidi Rodewald from the band Stew and The Negro Problem and the Tony Award-winning production Passing Strange, Stew’s semi-autobiographical rock musical from 2008. Stew and Ms Rodewald have been in Seattle for the past week mentoring the young performers and this year’s line-up includes a wide diversity of genres:

Chinese Erhu – Dylan Mines
Rock – In All Honesty, Martin Creed, El Mago
Hip-Hop Artist – Baluga Poasa Tuitoelau
Gospel Vocalist – Malik Meullion
Global Voices – Opera Vocalist – Denna Good-Mojab, Indian Classical Vocalist – Krithi Basu, Tibetan Classical Vocalist – Sonam Tshedzom Tingkhye, Folk Harp – Rachel Rigsby
Collaborative finale with all musicians
