Crates is a collection of songs from previous albums Scott has released over the years, remixed by various Producers.
The album is a nice assortment of songs that combine Classic and Modern Soul. It has good beats and fun musical patterns that change up. The songs they chose are a good combination of mellow mixes and dance club style tunes that work well together on this record. And Jill Scott has a lovely voice that is reminiscent of modern day Erykah Badu and 70’s style Minnie Riperton.
“Crates” remixes has some repetition of songs with different DJremixes, which really are not that different from each other (yet its’ always good to see DJ Jazzy Jeff’s name on a record!) but fun to listen to what each DJ does with them.
The only stick in my craw is the remixes done by DJ Alan King. In the few songs he has remixed on this album, his name has been dropped into the tunes on an average of every 30 seconds.I found this extremely grating to listen to. Please tell me, what in the world makes you think that it’s ok to drop your name smack dab in the middle of someone else’s song? I know how to read, If I want to know who re-mixed that particular song, I’ll look it up! Jeez!
Now that I got that off my chest, I do recommend a listen to the album and you can download it for free off her website, which I might add, she has a really well put together site with songs to download, videos to watch and tour information. Go to::http://www.jillscott.com/.
Happy Listening!
